Agpawa has been a resident of Markham since the 1960s. He served as the fire chief in neighboring Country Club Hills, Illinois, before making history as Markham's first Black fire chief. In April 2018, he was elected mayor, succeeding Ernest Blevins, who had taken on the role of acting mayor following the removal of David Webb Jr. due to bribery charges.
Agpawa was re-elected for a second term in April 2021.
The Markham Fire Department is dedicated to safeguarding lives and property within the community through safe, efficient, and professional services. They offer fire and emergency rescue operations, public education, fire prevention, and disaster response services. The department handles various calls related to fire, rescue, and non-transport EMS responses, covering an area of approximately seven (7) square miles within the city limits. Additionally, they ensure protection on two (2) interstates, I-57 and Tollway 294, that pass through the city.
The primary focus of the Police Department is to improve the well-being of Markham residents through collaborative efforts with the community, operating within the boundaries of law enforcement to uphold peace and ensure a secure atmosphere. Police officers are readily available to address a variety of incidents where authoritative intervention is necessary to alleviate or resolve issues related to law enforcement and public order.
